Sullivan County's McClanahan Library. On October 14, 1965 the Women's Progressive Club voted to sponsor, as a club project, a library for Sullivan County. Club president was Mrs. Corrine McCormack and Mrs. Corrine Downing was chariman of the Library Committee.
The library operated seven years in the courthouse with volunteer help and donations of books and money. On April 4, 1972 a one mill tax was passed to support the operation of the library.
The first library Board of Trustees appointed by the County Court were: William Barton, president; Edwin Borron, vice president; Norma Faye Cochran, secretary-treasurer; and other board members Elmer Fisher and Bob Williams. The first employees were Corinne Downing, librarian; and Evelyn Franklin and Vera Shaw, assistant librarians.
A gift of $15,000 from Mrs. Hedge McClanahan made it possible to purchase a building on the north side of the sqaure in Milan. On February 15, 1973 the libary opened at its present location.

In 1987 the library recieved a bequest from the P.M. Marr estate of $106,000, and in 1988 another for $5,000 from the Bessie Shoop estate. These funds made it possible to put a new roof on the building and upgrade the bookmobile.
In 1991 the adjoining building was purchased and remodeling began in the spring of 1992. A door connecting the newly purchased building was added making space for the children's room, office space and a handicapped accessible bathroom.
The library has an extensive assortment of books, sure to please anyone's reading tastes, computer terminals with internet access, and offers its facilities for classes in English for our non or limited english speaking citizens. The McClanahan library also houses an extensive genealogical library, including many local family histories, resource material, and microfilms of local court records and documents as well as local newspapers, and census'. |
